Bookstores in Northwest Florida

I love bookstores. I can spend hours in them, and bookstores in Northwest Florida offer a variety of settings from “beachy keen” little indies to big box “B” stores. In the early 90s when independent bookstores started getting creative in order to keep their customers (think You’ve Got Mail with Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks) and they’d let you browse the bookshelves with a cup of coffee, I was in seventh heaven.

So much has changed in the book and publishing business over the last fifteen years, with online booksellers offering massive virtual stores with absolutely any book you could possibly want. Many people have declared the local bookstore dead, but I think it still has a place in the heart of the community. It represents more than a place to buy books. It’s often a gathering place for locals, friends and book clubs.

So, with a toast to Florida bookstores, I dedicate these pages. If you’re looking for a Florida guide book to help you Explore the region or maybe a book to tell you more about Northwest Florida, or even a gripping novel to take to the beach, these bookstores in Pensacola, Tallahassee, Panama City Beach, and Destin all stock great reads. The booksellers are always knowledgeable and can offer book recommendations – and sometimes coffee.

Bookstores in Northwest Florida include the big “B” stores, Barnes & Noble and Books-A-Million. B&N has stores in Pensacola, Destin, and Tallahassee. Books-A-Million also has stores in those towns as well as in Fort Walton Beach and Panama City. I’ll list their addresses so you can find them easily if you’re shopping in the area, but my focus here is on the independent bookstores and how they differ in character and book offerings.

DeFuniak Springs Library

Some of the booksellers feature used books, or antique or rare books. If so, I’ll indicate that in the listing. Many bookstores in Northwest Florida feature local writers or books about the area, so be sure to ask when you’re in the store.

I’ll be adding to the list as I get a chance to visit these booksellers, but if you know of any bookstores in Northwest Florida that you think should be on the list, be sure to add them.
